Thanksgiving: The Key to a Great Christmas

This coming week begins the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.  There are some holidays on our calendars that we just can’t ignore… and Christmas is one of them!  Beginning this week we will be bombarded with television commercials advertising the latest gadgets and toys on the market.  Many people will be asked to to attend office parties, church dramas and other celebrations.

Is it just me or does Thanksgiving seem to get overlooked or even swallowed up by the hustle bustle of the Christmas holiday?  Thanksgiving could easily slide by and fall off the calendar and some people would barely notice.  Perhaps it is true, Thanksgiving gets a lot less holiday hype!  And maybe that’s ok because as Christians we should place more emphasis on celebrating the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day.

But did you realize there is a “hidden key” tuck away in the Bible that will help us through this holiday season and cause us to have a great Christmas? That key is found in 1 Thessalonians 5:18… “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

The key to having a great Christmas is to have a never-ending THANKSGIVING!

“Thanksgiving” is the key to making it through any situation or any circumstance you will ever face in life!   No wonder God continually commands us in the Scriptures to have a thankful heart or a thankful attitude. God Himself knows that if we can capture an attitude of gratitude we will be able to make it through the challenges and circumstances that life throws us!

Let me suggest three things a thankful attitude does for us:

First of all,  Thanksgiving Reminds Us of Our Source.   Thanksgiving reminds us that we are not self-sufficient people. We have a source and He is the Lord!  The Bible teaches us that God is the source of
every blessing. Every good thing comes from His mighty hand!  The beauty of a sunrise.  The air we breathe.  The job we have been given.  The friends we make.  The house in which we live.  Thanksgiving reminds us the source of all that we have comes from God!

Secondly,  Thanksgiving Keeps us Humble.  There is something about being grateful and acknowledging the goodness of God that causes pride to be minimized in our lives.  It is hard to be prideful when you know that it was God and Him alone that delivered you out of all your trouble.  It is hard to be lifted up in pride, when you know it could have only been the goodness of the Lord who worked a miracle when the doctors gave up all hope.  Sometimes we have to pinch ourselves and say, “Wait a minute, I can’t be proud or take credit for this, because this was only the Lord’s doing!”   The Bible says… “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (Jas. 4:7)  Thanksgiving has a way of humbling us and causing us to acknowledge the goodness of God.

Last of all,  Thanksgiving Points Us to a Savior.   My heart overflows with thanksgiving and praise for God’s indescribable gift,  the gift of salvation; which he brought to us through His son Jesus Christ!  And really?  Isn’t that what this season is all about in the first place.  We could never thank God enough for sending His one and only Son Jesus to be sacrificed for the sins of the world.

Would you like to have a great holiday season this year?  Would you like to have a great Christmas? Let it begin with “Thanksgiving”!

The key to a great Christmas begins with a never-ending Thanksgiving!
